My images are inspired by family. While they portray stylized versions of the natural world, the themes of intimacy, wildness and territoriality continue to bring themselves forward. They symbolize the constant desire in me to safeguard and hold together my family. It is my hope that they also inspire a sort of joy, or whimsy in the viewer, or perhaps even a tenderness towards one another.
Creating art is a way for me to access a meditative state of mind, and enjoy the profound healing it brings. Louise Bourgeois said ‘Art is a guarantee of sanity’ and for me the act of painting is just this. It brings with it a way for slowing down, listening to my chaotic little mind, and understanding who I am. Painting offers me the rare opportunity to inhabit the present moment, embrace the not-knowing, risk vulnerability, accept imperfection and yield compassion.
